Week 7 in Sevilla

Entry 8      The Week I still felt a bit lousy for the first half of the week which was not ideal as I had my first midterm and midterm prep in my other classes. I had tutoring with my kids as usual and nothing else during the week itself as I was trying to recover/get homework done/pack before my weekend trip.     The Weekend                      Friday This weekend I was in Morocco from Friday to Sunday, so yay! New country and new continent! Isabel and I booked the trip with a company because that seemed like the safest option and most comforting for my mom, and it also made the trip very easy and stress free. It also ended up being a group of all girls which was kind of a funny coincidence, with the only guys being our bus driver and guide. The bus picked us up in Sevilla and drove us to Gibraltar, where we took the ferry to Ceuta in Africa. I was not expecting the ferry to be as large as it wa...

Week 6 in Sevilla

Entry 7     The Week I had classes as usual and tutoring with my kids. We went to the park for a bit this week and made sandmen at the playground but had to head back when it started to sprinkle a bit. Before the rain started, a neighbor and her daughter brought their dog over and I got to pet the dog so that was awesome. Everyone from the area keeps telling me how out of the norm the rain is and that it barely rains here, yet I keep getting rained on, so it doesn't feel very true no matter how many times they say it is unusual. Although the city's architecture does support their claim that they aren't used to rain because Sevilla is  definitely not built for rain and gigantic puddles form all over the sidewalks where water has nowhere to drain. On Wednesday, I had a little class trip in the evening to downtown Sevilla. Our professor wanted to walk around and point out the various historical sites and where the boundaries of Roman Sevilla would have been. It was an ...

Week 5 in Sevilla

Entry 6      The Week Classes as usual this week but my Tuesday English tutoring with the local family was pushed to Wednesday because one of the kids had a basketball game. I taught the kids the game Concentration, which they really like and is super helpful for expanding/practicing their vocabulary. They also like to play hide and seek or monkey in the middle, but the younger brother always gets mad during the latter because his sister and I are taller, so he always ends up in the middle but still refuses to play a different game. It's a bit funny to me knowing how it will end but seeing him still so set on the game, but at least I can divert them to Concentration now!     The Weekend Friday was Dia de Andalucia, so a lot of shops were closed for the holiday and the options were pretty much just restaurants or the theater, so I did both. I went to the oreo croissant cafe again because one of my friends had not been yet (and because I wanted another oreo desser...

Week 4 in Sevilla

Entry 5      The Week This week was classes as usual, but I also signed up for a "babysitting program" through the international department at UPO where they pair international students with local families that have kids who are trying to learn English. Babysitting is an odd name for the program because it's not about childcare at all; instead, I spend time with the kids speaking in English so that they can practice, expand their vocabulary, and become familiar with different accents. I was paired with a family of 3 kids (5, 7, and 9 years old) on Monday and scheduled to see them for 2 hours every Tuesday afternoon. Getting myself to their house ended up being quite the adventure as I had planned to walk since they only lived one suburb over but that ended up requiring me to cross the freeway and Google maps was convinced that I could cross in places only meant for cars. I had to reroute quite a bit, double back, and eventually still ended up on a long road with no sidewa...
